How it works
Warm air holds more moisture. Add humidity to warm air and you load the sky with the raw material for rain.
Below freezing, that moisture crystallises instead of condensing, and you get snow rather than rain.
Strong winds shear the clouds sideways and, combined with heat and moisture, build the towering clouds that produce thunderstorms.

A single lightning bolt heats the air around it to about 30,000°C — five times hotter than the Sun's surface.
No two snowflakes form identically, because each takes its own path through the cloud.
Raindrops are shaped like tiny hamburger buns, not teardrops.
